55 people have died in Tamil Nadu in the last five days as heavy rain continued to lash several parts of the state. Most of the deaths have been reported from Cuddalore. In capital Chennai, many areas were flooded, trains and flights were delayed and schools and colleges were closed on Friday, bringing the city to a virtual standstill.
Normal life was thrown out of gear with heavy rains pounding Chennai, suburbs and neighbouring districts since Thursday night.
Many key stretches in the city experienced heavy water logging despite the Corporation commissioning new structures to drain water. According to Chennai Corporation sources, residents of 248 neighbourhoods reported water stagnation.
The city has received about 62mm of rainfall in past 3 days. This downpour led to several areas of Chennai being waterlogged. Trees were uprooted, severe traffic jams occurred and daily life was thrown into disarray for the residents. Residents kept civic officials on their toes, calling in to report 442 cases of civic problem resulting from water logging.
