Flood challenges left by passed storm in Velachery

Nearly three days after rain stopped, several parts of Velachery are flooded.
Velachrz Main Road is lying under a sheet of water, as the local lake is overflowing. Several damaged parts of the road was muddy.

Every November, Velachery is flooded by cyclonic rains. The major areas that were usually flooded are the low-lying areas near Velachery Lake, Ram Nagar extension and the Madipakkam Road and bridge. A flood water drainage canal was constructed along the Velachery 100-feet (30 m) road. Due to encroachment and other unknown problems, some part of the canal in the Velachery-Tambaram high road is not constructed completely. Generally it is felt that, after the canal was built to a major extent, the flooding problem in many areas along the 100-feet road has decreased substantially.

K.S. Ravi, a resident of Velachry Main Road, said: "The rainwater has entered many houses in Padmavathi Nagar as the height of the road has been increased."

Most areas in East Velachery, including Annai Indira Nagar, Kambar Street, Thiruvalluvar Street, Anna Nagar, Anna Nagar Extension, Kathiravan Nagar, Sarathy Nagar Fifth Street and VGP Selva Nagar near the Pallikaranai marsh are affected.
