Prakish Raja is master of Kutai basket who spent his hours crafting beautiful baskets on the side of Old Mahabalipuram Road( OMR) Chennai. The 55 years old said in the cause a week he would make about two finished basket depending on the sizes. Prakish who said he learnt making Kutai from his late father he is proud to call himself a master in kutai art. "my father advised me to take my profession very serious and am proud" he said. Prakish even if he run a small enterprise he state that he is proud of his contribution to the economy of his country. "My products are made from natural resources, this our very own Bambusa, when I was growing up my father grew some of it in our yard" he said.
He added that Bambusa are famous in India used for many work especially thatching. He further said the product are of quality and they are eco-friendly. Prakish talent is not only limited to baskets, but he does furniture's suitable for homes and offices.
" They can last forever, depended on how well a customer has used it" he said.
He also added that customers can bring the old product for repair at a very affordable price. Prakish said he opt to sit and sell on side of the road because of it is jam-packed which indeed easy for customer to find him. " I cannot afford to rent a shop neither could I afford the marketing tools of today, I am not educated in that sector" he said. Prakish who sell a basket at about R,300.00 to R 1000. 00 said the response from the customer has been very good and he is motivated. "People do appreciate my work" he said. He added that the demand is quite impressive he wish to do more, if he can have a better place to make baskets. He also wish that one day he can train young. "I am old now but I will be more happy to teach others
