Wastage of Land Resource - Paradox of Chennai

For the first time in Chennai, I often wonder why there are so many unoccupied houses or waste grounds in the city . Is the city too big? While thousands of citizens are living in dirty slums or even have no hut for living?

Walking along Millers Road, we can find tens of unoccupied houses, although the road is less than 600 meters. According to the a resident living near an old office of State Bank of India, the office was abandoned for more than ten years.

Not far from this office, Chandra Mansion, a mansion of the residential project by India Builders, has been standing empty for more than 20 years. The house was damaged without any maintenance in a long time.

The wastage of residential land as well as productive land is not not existing on a particular road but also in around Chennai, Millers Road is just an example. It's not too hard to see an occupied house or waste ground in our city.

People say that a big city always goes along with big slums, Chennai is not an exception. I was shock at the first time came to Chennai because of squalid slums on Cooum riversides and homeless people who sleeping on the streets. The land resource would never excessive. Then, why is the city  wasting land resource  while there are too many people who need it?
