Two weeks after heavy rains and flooding brought Chennai to a standstill, killing dozens of people and leaving thousands more stranded, the city was slowly getting back on its feet. Two weeks ago, the retail paradise of Chennai, was completely paralysed and turned into a floating island because of the rain and the water from Chembarabakkam Lake. Pandjyan, owner of a fashion shop on the main road revealed for nearly ten days, the water came up to the waist and rose into his store. A street hawker remembers that they always leave thier consignments under the bridge. As soon as the water came in, they had to leave it there and run for thier lives. Many families left their homes at midnight, could not get out of T Nagar. The lacking of infrastructure planning in T Nargar might be thhe cause that led to serious flooding problem.

Although water was drained in almost T Nargar, some areas are still affected by drainage. Near Saravavar Store, under the bridge where is the major business activity site, the traffic gets many troubles due to the remained water.

Flooding not only caused several civic issues for residences, it also swept away the profit of many household business in T Nargar. Mr. Kannan who has 10 years business in T Nargar owning a small jewellery kiosk says: “I had to close the shop for 20 days because of flood. I had no food, no money.” Obviously, the small stores have suffered fatal damages. He says that after re-opened the shop, He has not earned too much because there are only eight to ten customers per  day. It seems Chennai people haven’t yet come back with their shopping demand. However everything is getting better, T Nargar will rally from its depression.
