storm water drains were being misused by people

Water logging is a major cause for concern that requires immediate attention and the roads didn’t even have the capacity to withstand the mild summer showers that the city experienced last week.

Kumar Thangavel, a resident of Alapakkam, said, “Since the roads are being dug quite often, the net connection and the phone lines get disrupted, adding to our miserable living condition. The power cut is very unbearable and the roads that are already narrow are getting narrower, making it tough for motorists to ride. A lot of people have complained, but nothing seems to be happening.” Narayanan sarangan, a resident of  Madhuravoyal for past eight years, has more to say.
“The roads have not been laid for the past six years and have been dug up for a multitude of reasons for at least four times till date. There are no roads; they are only paths for trekking.”
 
He said, “We park our cars at the end of the roads because the roads are barely motorable. Our essential stuff like car tyres go missing due to this and the maintenance cost of four wheelers has increased too.” The roads, though leveled, have become potholed and slushy due to the recent rains in Alapakkam main road. Water has entered houses and vehicles got submerged in the rain water. "We lost all our valuable items and have only managed to save our lives," said Sam, a Chennai resident. Proper draining out system has to be laid on sides of the road considering the level flow, and proper connecting the lakes / rivers into sea has to be done if require by removing certain constructions constructed on the lake / river bed areas.
 As everyone's responsibility, we should stop using plastic bags, and stop through plastic bags on road side and canals said by Gopi chander, a resident of Chennai. The 9 Street is misused by traders for dumping poultry wastes and meat. The damage caused by the rain was severe on these streets as they were already in a pitiable condition. The existing storm water drains were demolished to build new ones and the roads were dug up some years back.


Unfortunately, the debris was dumped right in the middle and the roads were not laid again.All that remains now are roads with potholes and bumpy rides, making life difficult for the residents of this area.People said that the storm water drains were being misused to let out their domestic sewage.
