Football fever spreading in Pallavaram

With shrinking playgrounds and expanding population, Chennaites move towards soccer

Chennai,
The one game nation, cricket is a religion, sachin is our god… are long gone sayings in Pallavaram.

When recently visited Jamin Pallvaram, a part of Pallavaram municipality, a bunch of twenty in their early twenties play soccer furiously wearing jersey’s of Neymar, Messi and Ronaldo and so on.

The Football grounds coincidentally (totally three in closer proximity) placed near Tambaram-Beach sub-urban railway tracks. The furious shouting of players rose above the noise of passing trains.

When asked Siva one of the senior of the bunch about how they made a playground from a barren land so closely to the tracks, he said, “This place on which the ground is set belongs to railways, but, because  it was abandoned for a long time, we made a football ground eight years ago.”

The youth bunch is confident that the railway department will not occupy this land. Because this has become a part of their residence which has been here for three decades now.

Although, playiong soccer is so much fun, the local boys feel that there is no motivation or oppurtunities for highly talented kids play here day and night.

“Some go upto zoonal level competition and many of us play  local league matches, but to participate competition of higher level we need money. If oppurtunities is given, things will different.” Said, Williams, another senior player, concerned about young lads.
